Alabama Physician Dispensing Laws & Regulations

Note: PharmaLink has compiled the information below for reference only. State dispensing regulations change frequently and we recommend consulting an attorney or your state medical or pharmacy board with specific questions or to verify your eligibility to dispense.

Physicians may dispense medications in-office to their patients in Alabama under their state medical licenses. No dispensing permit is required for non-controlled legend drugs, but a permit is required for controlled substances (Pursuant to Board of Medical Examiners Rule 540-X-4-.05). If you are planning to dispense controlled medications, PharmaLink’s software can automatically report to the Alabama Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) on your behalf. More information about Alabama dispensing regulations can be found here. The dispensing physician registration form can be found here. Each location where medications are dispensed must be registered separately.

Mid-level dispensing (PA dispensing and NP dispensing) varies from state to state, even in states where physicians may dispense. Alabama regulations do not specify whether or not Physician Assistants (PAs) and Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs) can dispense non-control legend drugs. If you are unsure whether or not you may dispense in your state, please reach out to your state licensing board or contact us for more information.
