Maine requires no separate dispensing license, which puts the substantive requirements — rather than an application — at the center of getting started.
Authority to dispense
Physician dispensing is currently permitted in Maine under the physician’s state medical license. There is no dispensing permit, registration, or fee.
Where the requirements actually live
Because no application process exists to walk a practice through the rules, the operative requirements sit in statute rather than in a checklist. All state and federal regulations for storage and labeling of medications must be followed.
Providers who are interested in dispensing are encouraged to review the Maine Pharmacy Act to understand all requirements related to dispensing at the point of care. Reading it before the first dispense is the practical substitute for the review a permit application would otherwise force.
PMP reporting
Maine requires dispensers to submit information about dispensed controlled substances to the state’s Prescription Monitoring Program no later than the close of business on the next business day after dispensing, via approved electronic submission.
The data set is more detailed than a simple drug-and-date record. Reportable fields include dispenser and prescriber identification numbers, prescription details, the National Drug Code (NDC) for the drug dispensed, quantity, dosage, and patient information. A practice should confirm its system captures the NDC of the exact product dispensed, since that is a common gap when stock is repackaged.
Labeling and records
The absence of a licensing checkpoint means nothing in Maine’s process reviews your setup before you begin. Secure storage, accurate patient-specific labeling, and complete records of what was received and dispensed all remain the practice’s responsibility from day one.
